A Comprehensive Guide: Welcoming a New Cat to Your Home

In celebration of Adopt a Shelter Cat Month—a cause we believe in all year round—we aim to provide valuable advice on how to smoothly introduce a new cat to your household. Cats are sensitive beings, and adjusting to a new environment can be overwhelming, especially if other animals have already established their territory. To help your new feline companion feel at ease, follow these tips from our team.

Tip #1: Establish a secure space for your new cat

It may take several days for your new cat to feel comfortable around you and even longer to integrate into your home if you have other pets. To ensure a sense of safety and security, provide your cat with their own dedicated area. Set up a spacious room equipped with a litter box, food and water dishes, a scratching post, and bedding. This way, your cat won’t have to compete for essential resources. Spend ample time playing, petting, and interacting with your new cat to help them become accustomed to your presence. However, allow them uninterrupted time to explore their surroundings at their own pace.

Tip #2: Maintain a consistent diet

The stress of moving to a new environment can upset a cat’s delicate digestive system. To minimize further stress, stick to the same food that your cat was eating before the transition. If you plan to switch to a new diet, give them a few days to settle in with their current food, then gradually introduce the new food over the course of a week.

Tip #3: Allow your new cat time to adjust

Your new cat may need a week or two to acclimate to their new home. Therefore, it’s best to delay introductions with family and friends until your pet is comfortable with you and their surroundings. However, scheduling a meeting with your regular veterinarian is important to ensure your new cat is healthy and up to date on preventive care. Since another trip soon after the journey to your home can be stressful, it’s advisable to wait another week before making any other introductions.
